Helen Blaschke

Helen Blaschke was born in Austin, Texas on March 17, 1931, the seventh of eight children. Her dream, even at a very early age, was to become a teacher and she set out to make that dream come true by attending the University of Texas. After graduation, she began her teaching career in Kingsville and continued on to Buda, Austin, and finally to McDade.

Helen taught mostly kindergarten and elementary aged children but she also coached a middle school girl's basketball team for a short time. In Austin, she taught in the public schools and also a private kindergarten located at Windsor Park Baptist Church.

In 1977, Helen came to McDade and began teaching several different grade levels, sometimes all at the same time. After her retirement in 1996, Helen still continued to work for McDade as a substitute teacher.

Helen devoted her life to the education of children. She believed that one of the most precious things in life was a child and that every child deserved a quality education. She provided many generations of children that chance by being a knowledgeable, patient, and focused educator. Helen sincerely embodied the quote, “The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book”.
